Tips on Selecting An Insurance Company

When shopping for auto insurance, do a little homework first, shop around, and select your insurer carefully. Your insurer should offer both fair prices and excellent service. These tips will help you find the right insurer for you:

Know your state's auto insurance requirements:

Most states require you to carry a minimum amount of liability coverage. Many states have "no-fault" auto insurance systems. Coverage for medical costs for you and your passengers is optional in some states. Coverage for damage to your car is optional. Write up your personal auto insurance profile:

List pertinent information concerning what type of vehicle you drive, where you drive, who else drives, what your driving record is, where you live, what optional safety features your car has. This profile will make the next step easier. Comparison Shop:

Prices for the same coverage can vary by hundreds of dollars, so it pays to shop around. Ask your friends, check the Yellow Pages, and call your state insurance department for guidance. Contact insurance agents or companies for general pricing information. Select a few insurers for personalized quotes. Meet with potential insurance agents:

Make a few appointments, bring your personal auto insurance profile with you, and ask questions. You want a fair price AND quality service. Ask about available discounts, higher deductibles, service options and claims procedures after accidents. Take notes. Compare Again:

Consider cost, coverage offered, and quality of service available. Select your insurer. Read your policy:

Yes, even the fine print! Ask questions. Keep your policy at hand. Call your insurer to keep your policy up-to-date, inform your agent of any changes (new car, new job, new driver, etc.), and ask periodically about any possible discounts. Review your policy yearly with your insurer. Keep your insurance information with you:

Many states require drivers to carry a proof-of-insurance card with them when driving. Ask your insurer for a card, and keep it in your wallet or in your car.

Home insurance:

Tips on Selecting Home Insurance

Shop around

Provided there's no tie in to the mortgage lender you can go directly to an insurance company or via an insurance broker for any of these insurance policies.

As always, shop around. The cost savings and quality of cover vary greatly.

Only buy the cover you need

The first rule with insurance of any type is get only what you need. Not too much and definitely not too little insurance cover.

For example a single person with no dependents does not need life insurance but should consider Permanent Health Insurance.

Make sure it really does cover you

Another consideration is just because an insurance company has sold you a policy this does not mean you're eligible to claim on it.

To make sure you are covered you can challenge them to confirm in writing that your particular circumstances are covered.

Be cautious when changing funds - you may have to serve benefit limitation periods and waiting times.

You can save money on your premium by:

Buying a product with an excess (an excess is an amount of money a member agrees to pay for a hospital stay before benefits are payable). Buying a product where you pay a co-payment if you go into hospital (the member agrees to pay an agreed amount each time a service is provided -- usually a set amount per day). Buying a product that excludes treatment for some conditions. Buying a product that only covers you as a private patient in a public hospital. You should check how many times the excess applies per calendar year. Sometimes it applies once, sometimes three times. As a general rule it's better to save money by choosing a product with a high excess rather than choosing a product that excludes treatment for some conditions.

A number of policies also place limits on some treatments (which means that the fund will only meet part of the costs) and may exclude coverage for some treatments altogether.

Commonly limited and excluded treatments include:

Assisted reproduction Coronary bypass and major heart surgery Cosmetic surgery Cataract surgery Hip, knee and other joint replacements Obstetrics and birth related care Psychiatric Care Rehabilitation
